Most buyers choose the first agent they meet or the first agent that is recommended to them, so make sure that person is in tune with your experience level and is someone who has resources to help you get a loan and find the right home, and the experience and support from his/her company to make your transaction go as smoothly as possible.
You may find you already know an agent who is also a friend or family member. While it may seem like a great idea to hire this person, remember that your personal relationship stands the chance of being affected by the businesslike negotiations of buying.
Agents can work full- or part-time, but you want a professional, someone who is up to date in the market, has the latest education or continuing education, and takes their responsibilities seriously enough to be available full-time. There are too many changes in the law, the local market, and mortgage loans to risk your most important transaction on someone who isn’t committed to you.
